How to Avoid Disease: Social Connection


This week, we have been talking about how to avoid disease. This is especially relevant in our world today, as so many are concerned with the prevention of the viruses that are running rampant in our time.


We have talked about prevention with fitness training, proper diet, sleep and stress reduction. Today we are going to talk about the importance of social connection on our immune system.


This is an often forgotten part of immunity, but it is so critical to our health in so many ways. This is being studied with increasing frequency and is showing good effectiveness with decreasing stress in our daily lives.


Studies show that those with good social connections to family and friends have lower levels of stress hormones, which can adversely affect your arteries and your intestines.


In fact, other studies have shown that a lack of social connection is actually a greater threat to your health than smoking, obesity and high blood pressure! They have shown that strong social connections can actually lengthen your life, strengthen your immune system and help you recover from disease even faster!


In addition to physical health, those with poor or no social connection are at significantly increased risk of anxiety, depression and antisocial behavior. These disorders also set up for a higher risk of chronic diseases.


All in all, strong social connection can and will help you to stay healthy from both chronic disease as well as more acute illness. You should work to make your connections with close friends and family tight so that you can stay as healthy as possible!
