Movements You Should Be Doing: Press

This week, we are talking about the movements you should be doing in your workouts that will make you better and more able to accomplish your goals!

Today, I want to talk about presses, most notably overhead presses.

The press is often forgotten, especially overhead. MOST of us think about pressing in the form of bench press, but the overhead press is just as, if not more important for your body!

A bench press works to improve your pressing and stabilizing muscles in the horizontal plane. However, adding the same movement overhead adds more muscles to the mix, allowing you to burn more energy!

Additionally, adding overhead presses to your routine is going to help you more with your daily activities. It is very rare that someone needs to simulate a bench press in their daily life and routine. However, we frequently need to reach and push objects over our head! This more closely resembles an overhead press!

Many people seem to think that pushing weight overhead is dangerous. As with other movements that have been thought to be dangerous, research shows that it is not dangerous at all when performed correctly and with the proper load!

There are several different types of presses. You can see them here, here and here! Each of these movements is a little more complex than the one before it, so you should really be sure that you have the fundamentals of pressing down before you try to add too much weight or complexity to your movement! A good coach can help you to ensure your safety and efficiency with your movements as you learn them!

Adding these movements to your workout regimen is going to improve your upper body strength and can make you look, feel and move better for many of your other movements!
